Prescott Declined Anschutz GiftIt has been reported that John Prescott refused to keep the gift given to him by super casino bidder Philip Anschutz. During his controversial stay at the Colorado ranch of Anschutz, he was given an elaborate cowboy outfit, which he admitted to wearing, but later on did not intend to keep. The cowboy outfit set is said to be the only gift that was presented to Prescott valued at more than 140 UK Pounds between April 2005 and March 2006. Ministers are under obligation to declare presents that they are given, and are only allowed to keep them if they purchase the items from the government. The gifts that are declined would otherwise be kept by their departments. Prime Minister Tony Blair in a Parliamentary written answer gave details of gifts purchased by ministers. The prime minister himself listed 17 items, of which he only purchased three. No values are listed for items that the ministers turned down, however, Prescott was forced to reveal the cost of the controversial wild west outfit to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. He disclosed to Sir Philip Mawer that the Stetson hat had a value of 97 UK Pounds, the boots 120 UK Pounds, the spurs 185 UK Pounds and the belt and buckle 185 UK Pounds. |
